Independence Heights is a historic area in the northwest of Houston, recognized as the initial city founded by African Americans. It is the residence of over 14,000 individuals. In the past year, a diverse group of people including former residents, business owners, church leaders, parents, teachers, community leaders, and partners have collaborated to envision a brighter future for this historic neighborhood. Through a series of community gatherings, these stakeholders developed a collective vision for the neighborhood known as the “Quality of Life Agreement”. Essentially, the residents have joined forces to improve the overall quality of life for themselves and their neighbors.
